If you notice a sudden change in hearing that lasts longer than a day, see your doctor within a day or two. In most cases, the cause is simply wax in the ear canal or fluid in the middle ear. Sudden hearing loss may also be caused by infections or other inflammatory conditions. Certain conditions are treatable with antibiotics, antivirals or steroids. Delayed treatment increases the chance of permanent hearing loss.
