Dr. Armstrong Honored for Service as an ABFPRS Oral Examiner

Supporting rigorous standards in facial plastic and reconstructive surgery

Michael Armstrong Jr., M.D., recently returned from Arlington, Virginia, where he served as an oral examiner for the 40th annual examination of the American Board of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery.

During the examination, ABFPRS President Theda C. Kontis, M.D., presented Dr. Armstrong with an award recognizing more than five years of voluntary service as a proctor and oral examiner. Dr. Armstrong is proud to donate his time and travel to Arlington at his own expense to support this important work.

Why the examination matters

Board certification demonstrates that a surgeon’s education, experience, judgment and professional conduct have been evaluated against meaningful standards. The ABFPRS was established to improve the quality of facial plastic and reconstructive surgery available to the public by measuring surgeons’ qualifications against rigorous standards. Candidates must meet substantial training and practice requirements, submit operative reports for peer review, and successfully complete an eight-hour written and oral examination.

As an oral examiner, Dr. Armstrong evaluates candidates’ clinical judgment, surgical planning, recognition of complications and ability to respond appropriately to challenging patient scenarios.

“Serving as an examiner requires considerable preparation and two full days away from home, but it is important work. Patients deserve to know that ABFPRS certification has been earned through a careful and credible process.”
— Michael Armstrong Jr., M.D.

Dr. Armstrong has been certified by the American Board of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery since 2001. His continued participation as an examiner reflects Richmond ENT’s commitment not only to excellent patient care, but also to maintaining high professional standards within the specialty.
